Neglect

Neglect is a form of abuse. Recently there was a man in Glen Ellyn that was arrested for having left his mother on the floor of the home that they shared for several weeks without moving her. She lay in her own excrement and was literally sealed to the floor.

The wounds that she suffered were life-threatening and she died after having been taken to the hospital once she was discovered. Normal individuals or individuals that have not dealt with caring for an elderly loved one have to ask what in the world this man was thinking.

This was such a horrific story and yet more of this type of abuse goes on that we actually know about – or even care to know about! Neglect of an elder is against the law people!

If you are caring for an elderly loved one and cannot do it – due to time limitations, financial obligations, your own family, or simply because it proves to be just too much for you to handle, find some help! Do NOT let yourself begin to neglect your loved one. You WILL regret it in the end!

There are plenty of agencies, individuals like me that enjoy taking care of an older person, or government associations that can step into help. Don’t let yourself forget that With Age Comes Respect because you will pay for it in the end!
