Although I keep iterating this same statement lately about the cold and the snow and how dangerous it is for seniors to be outside, one more time I am going to repeat this warning for the National Weather Service (NWS) has once again issued another winter storm warning for DuPage County (and connecting counties) where my seniors reside. The warning goes through tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m.
Temperatures were decent today, getting to be about 30 degrees, with snow. Temps are supposed to drop back down again and the snow will continue. We could potentially get between five and 10 inches of additional snowfall.
Since roads are supposed to be dangerously slippery, it is more likely that sidewalks and driveways could be worse, so any senior going out without an escort, could be in potential danger. As the temperatures continue to drop over the next few days, elders with thin skin are in even more danger than the rest of the general population. No one wants that!
Wind chills tomorrow morning may feel like -30 degrees and by Monday, with ambient temperatures reaching as low as -15 degrees, the wind chills will be even worse! Since the NWS is advising everyone to beware the windy, cold days, saying it is dangerous for anyone to be outdoors, this is especially applicable to the older crowd that could get confused and lost in this extreme cold.
Since I believe that With Age Comes Respect, I believe in protecting those that may not be as capable of protecting themselves any longer. If you witness a senior citizen out in this current weather, please help them back inside and maybe even run an errand for the so that they do not feel the need to be out and about.
