Today is happy for many reasons (Posted late on July 5th)

While most people will be having a celebration of sorts today due to the fact that today is Independence Day, this day is really special for my dad who turns 72 today and especially for one south Arkansas woman who celebrated her 116th birthday today. Gertrude Weaver has now been deemed America’s oldest confirmed living human being although she is the second-oldest person known to the world.

July 4th was selected as Weaver’s birth date of choice because she never did have an official birth record otherwise. To confirm her actual age, the census was used as was her marriage license from 1915 which established her age as 17 at the time.

Wow! 116 is really something to celebrate – even more than the fact that my dad used to tell me that he was shot out of a rocket the day he was born! I believed him until about two years ago (joking!).

Our independence means even more when there is even more to celebrate. Happy birthday to all of the great people born on this day – or at least celebrate their birthday on this day. Happy birthday to our independence and the fact that America is still free!

As a caregiver it is great to witness human longevity. Giving best wishes is just another way for us to show our clientele that we know that With Age Comes Respect!
